Battle of the Books 2024

Green Park takes 2024 Battle of the Books title!

The Green Park Panthers prevailed at the annual citywide 2024 WWPS Battle of the Books on the evening of April 24 hosted at Edison Elementary. Teams from each elementary school were selected from 4th and 5th grade competitors to represent their student body after winning their schoolwide battles. Teams demonstrated their knowledge of complicated questions based on the twenty Washington Library Association's 2024 Children's Choice Picture Book Award nominees. Fast paced and fun, just a few points separated the five teams' final scores. Green Park Panthers took home the WWPS BOB trophy, and all participants were treated to four fun prizes as well as a brand new book of their choice from the BOB store.

Starting in September, all students at all elementary schools across the district begin their study of these 20 nominated titles. They learn about the story, of course, but also about the author and illustrator, whether the book is fiction or nonfiction, genre, theme, setting, author's purpose, as well as various literary devices such as metaphor vs. simile, figurative language, and point of view, in addition to interesting and unique facts about each book. The BOB competition is the culminating activity for district 4th and 5th graders for the study of these books. K-3 students will end their study by casting their votes for their favorite book. Those votes will then be submitted to the statewide vote for the most popular picture book in Washington for 2024.
